The Doctor and His Pack of Sticks
The first time the Doctor came around Alex was sitting underneath a tree watching kids her age play on a jungle gym, napping. The warmth of the summer sun sang through the clusters of leaves and branches. A sense of tranquility left her soul heavy and her mind light when a soft thud awoke her from her sleeping.
Occupying the other side of the tree was a man. Adorned in a long white coat, he sat with his head in his hands.
Alex rolled her head around, pulling her ten-year-old muscles to stretch them out to look around the tree, watching as the older man pulled a gray box from his pocket to drag a long, thin stick from its confines. Following
She knocked on the back door to the clinic, her hands pushing up the sleeves of hoodie as she shivered - it was freezing today, Alex could practically see waves of snow falling to hit the pavement.
The door creaked up to reveal a plump older woman, her attire formal. She looked Alex up and down, her face contorted with an unpleasant sneer. "What do you want?" Her voice was as unpleasant as her appearance.
Alex rubbed his forearms nervously, "Could I speak to Doctor Bernie, please?"
The woman glared at the small girl, seemingly displeased with the request. "No."
Alex felt a bit of panic rise...no, she needed to keep calm...

Why was it so cold?!
Alex's diaphragm pulsated violently, her lungs aching to be allowed to move freely.... shivering was literally suffocating her.
The rough texture of the bricks pulled against the black fabric of her shirt as her body practically vibrated against the wall. She pressed her body farther into the corner, hoping some heat from the home on the other side would push through.

Alex felt a blanket of discomfort wrap around her as her mother, Abigail, tucked her into bed. An obligatory child even at 9, Alex allowed her mother to pull the covers up to her chin, kiss her good night, all the while whispering soft promises of love and safety.
"It's okay, love. You're safe. We're safe. Go to sleep for mummy."
Alex hummed in response, allowing her eyes to drift shut when her mother flicked off the side lamp.
As Alex listened to her mother's footsteps decrescendo down the hall she sighed to herself; she thought it was silly - she wasn't tired at all. It felt as if it were noon, not nine-thirty at night like the huge gran
Sometimes, Alex could remember his little voice lisping his advanced vocabulary. Even with the speech impediment his consonants and vowels were well articulated. His mastery of the English language impressed her, even now, years later. She marveled at his ability to intrigue adults with his ability to comprehend and participate in the conversation.
His voice, sometimes, was the only thing she could bring herself to focus on.
Sometimes when she could barely bring herself to eat...or cry....or breath her mind would bring forth his voice to talk soothing tones to her, his high voice manipulated to show concern.
Sometimes she knew this was onl

"Eddward!" She giggled, her brown hair splayed messily across her face. The tiny girl's cheeks and forehead turn red, attention raptured by the boy sitting across from her contorting his facial features. With each shift of his face came one of a variety of noises, his voice modulating to each new face, encouraged by the girl's shrieking laughter.
In her laughter she never heard her father coming up from behind her, but she did feel the hand that yanked her up from the grass, her little purple dress fluttering helplessly. She felt the confusion and terror that pulsed through her as he practically threw her in the car next to stacked boxes tha
